History
Incorporated in the 1960s as United Health Services, the organization once served as a conduit for monies raised through United Way of North Carolina to support research at the state?s medical school.
UHS changed its mission in the 1970s to focus on what it determined was the No. 1 unmet health need in the United States ? substance abuse. Since then, the Alcohol/Drug Council of North Carolina, as it was renamed in 1989, has evolved into a provider of advocacy, information and referral services and public education for the state. Founding director Tony Mulvihill was the guiding force of the organization until his death in April 2004.
Throughout its history, ADCNC has presented and promoted creative solutions to gaps in the continuum of services for addicts and their families. ADCNC also has provided leadership resulting in the passage of state legislation addressing the disease of addiction.
